May 2002 Archives

Welcome to the May 2002 Rant Archives. These posts are from the brief period of time when I used blogger, so they aren't archived very well. Some of the internal links might not work, though references to outside sites should be just fine.

That's eight days of work down, and only 65 more to go, which means I'm about a tenth of the way through my summer employment. My job's not half as bad as I pretend it is, but it will be quite boring for the next two days, because I've run out of work to do. The Alpha Dave is on vacation for the week, and the Beta Dave doesn't talk to me, so I'm left to fend for myself. We're opening up eight temporary stores this summer, and it's my job to fill their orders for clothes racks. The first store, in Myrtle Beach, was finished when I got there, and the next three stores were half-finished. I've since finished up Vero Beach and Lakeland, and I'm all set to work on Eidenburgh. Unfortunately, the kind folks over at whatever mall we're using over there are taking their sweet time sending us their order. With no official task to complete, I'm just wasting time building leg sets that I know I'll need later. But enough shop talk! I finished readind The Magus today which is some bizzare psychological book that my dad recommended, though he warned me that I'd hate the ending. He was right, and I hated it, and while I was on my way down to the basement to tell him, my watch chain got caught on the banister and came right off. The watch works just fine, but there's no longer any way to attach it to my belt loop. I'm torn between going to a jeweler and having them try to fix it, or just buying a new chain. Also, I've decided to read Circle of Friends again, because I just can't get enough Maeve Binchy. It's a pretty short book, and easy to read, so I should be finished by Friday.

I actually hung out with Elocina and Company last night, for the first time in a week. We watched Gilmore Girls, followed by Rock 'n' Roll Wrestling Women Vs. the Aztec Mummy, which our new friend Ed brought over. We pretty much talked through the whole thing, but there wasn't really much of a plot to follow anyway. I'd like to find an alias of some kind for Ed, just so he fits in with the rest, but I dont' know the rest of his name, so we'll have to hold off on that one. One day I might just decided to abandon this whole farce of aliases and just refer to people by their names, like Elocina and Leah do in their livejournals. Probably not though, since I like being weird on principle. I'm having a random movie marathon with Kirhsa tomorrow night, and on Friday I'm seeing Attack of the Clones with Samoht, Trebor, and Edmij. Samoht ordered tickets for us on-line, and we're all set to see the 8:30 showing. We're leaving mad early though, since we'd like to get good seats.

I saw my two movies this weekend, and they were pretty good, actually. The Scorpion King rocked for an action movie, but unfortunately, I was expecting a little more. I really enjoyed the first two Mummy movies, especially the Egyptian aspects. The Scorpion King really had nothing to do with Egypt, or even the first two movies, besides the fact that The Rock appeared in The Mummy Returns. There were some pretty awesome people though, and it gets an official MVK rating of 7. There were quite a few awesome people, and the action sequences did rock, but I expected more of a storyline, and it really bugged me how they mixed mythologies.

Eeldi and I tried to go to Old Country Buffet today, but everybody and their mom was there, literally, and the line was far too long to deal with. We went to Pizza Hut instead, where, much to my excitement, there was vanilla pudding. I don't know if you've ever tried dipping dessert breadsticks in pudding, but the flavor combination is to die for. We actually didn't see The New Guy, but we'll be seeing that next week, since we both already have plans to see Episode 2. We saw Changing Lanes instead, which was pretty darn good. Ben Affleck doesn't really do too much for me, but he is a pretty good actor. Samuel L Jackson was awesome as usual, and I look forward to seeing him on Friday, kicking ass, Jedi style. The theatrical trailers ruined quite a bit of the movie for me, but there was still enough suprizes and general coolness to give Changing Lanes a 9. I look forward to seeing Sum of All Fears later this summer with Affleck and Morgan Freeman. I might actually read a couple Tom Clancey novels this summer, since my Dad owns pretty much all of them.

Do you know how much of a pain it is to use a dial-up connection when you're used to broadband access? I'm sure all of you people out there that use dial-up all year round won't appreciate my situation, but believe me, it's totrue. I was all prepared to make a post each day, and even to write movie reviews of the monkeyload of movies I'll be watching this summer. So far Spiderman is the only movie I've seen, and it was awesome. I might whip up a review of it later, but in case I don't, it's getting a 10 out of 10. I'm actually going to buy some trade paperbacks when I get the money. They cost about $15 each, but they archive between 10 and 15 older comics. Much more cost efficient than collecting the individual comic books, especially since the older ones are worth quite a bit of money. I started work on Monday, and even though it's already been four days, I'm already tired of it. Of course, it's work, so that's to be expected. The work's not too difficult, and I remember everything from last year, so I'm making pretty good progress. I'm going to learn how to operate a forklift in the next few weeks, and the Daves are teaching me how to use the vinyl printing machine that they make signs with. Pretty soon, I'll be qualified to do just about anything that needs to be done, although the Daves will be handling most of the difficult stuff. I'm basically a Pipe Monkey, with the occasional break to deliver packages to the shipping docks or unload a truck. I'm seeing The Scorpion king tomorrow night, and on Sunday, I'm seeing The New Guy with Eeldi. I'm not terribly excited about the second movie, but not much else is playing right now, and it should be funny, at the very least.

Since I'll be leaving Penn State in two days anyway, I've decided to start downloading with reckless abandon. We're limited to 1.5 Gigs of download per week, and I've probably already passed that today. I'm trying to download every episode of Cowboy Bebop, and so far I've goteen 15 of 26. I've already downloaded the movie, which is 570 Megs by itself. Once the University realizes that I've passed my limit for the week, they'll cut me down to a 56K connection for the rest of the week. And for some reason, modem speed is in kilobits, not kilobytes, so it's really more like 7K a second. I've got about 40 hours until my dad gets here though, so I should be fine. Leah is almost finished moving his stuff out and pretty soon I'll have the room to myself. Unfortunately, I'll have to start studying for my 465 test like right after he leaves. I haven't had any time to play Lunar today, since he's got boxes and ples of clothes all over the room. I finally picked up the last two Cranberries songs I've been missing, which brings my total to 81. I'm still missing two REM songs, which is a shame, because I'd like their entire collection to burn to CDs for work this summer. I usually don't go for live versions of songs, and in REMs case, I'm also avoiding B-sides because I'll run out of CDs otherwise. Plus, their material from Dead Letter Office is really hard to find.

Currenlty Listening to: Cranberries - Reason
Link of the Day: Cowboy Bebop - the Site - I haven't really checked out this site, but it's focused on Cowboy Bebop, and that's what I was going for. I'd have to say that Jet is my favorite character so far, though I'm also quite fond of Ein. Edward hasn't shown up yet, so I don't really have an opinion of her. And that's not a typo, by the way. She goes by Ed, but her full name is Edward Wong Hau Pepelu Tivrusky IV. Don't ask me why her parents called her Edward. I might find out myself when I'm finished watching the show.

That's five exams down, and two to go, and I finally get a nice long break. I don't have to start studying again until about 8:00 tomorrow night, so I'm going to do nothing better than I ever have before. The exams went pretty well, except for Greek, which was basically a repeat of last semester. If you weren't around back then, I totally failed my last Greek final, but it seems that everybody else bombed again too, so things should work out. I started downloading Cowboy Bebop episodes last night, and they're pretty darned entertaining. There's a chance that it might surpass Outlaw Star as my favorite anime, but I'll have to watch the whole series before I'm sure. Either way, Ein is the coolest dog in the world. I did a search for Mecherath on google today, and my site was only the second thing to come up. The thing that came up first is actually the link of the day, since it's pretty darn cool.

Currently Listening to: Tenacious D - The Greatest Song in the World Tribute
Link of the Day: Mecherath, the Archangel of Mystery - Apparently I'm a high ranking divine being in some obscure role playing game. I've got some pretty cool powers, and they all deal with mystery and sorcery. A bunch of the other angels hate me, but I do have some really cool underlings. I might have to play this game some time, since it would really rock to play a character named after myself.
