April 2002 Archives

Welcome to the April 2002 Rant Archives. These posts are from the brief period of time when I used blogger, so they aren't archived very well. Some of the internal links might not work, though references to outside sites should be just fine.

I couldn't sleep, so I decided to finish updating my site. I'm just going to stay up an hour longer, and wake up an hour later. Hopefully Leah goes to sleep soon, since it's easier to go off to dreamland when he isn't awake pounding on his keyboard, crunching potato chips, or playing seventy-six trombones...

Well, I didn't quite finish with the style sheets, but I only have 7 more pages left to edit. Those should be up sometime tomorrow, if I get a break between taking finals and studying for them. I actually didn't do too much studying today, since I'm a giant slacker, but I'll be making up for it tomorrow. At about 11:30, after a healthy lunch, it's off to a study lounge for four fun-filled hours of calculus problems. Then I get out the CSE 331 notes, for a last minute cram session before the exam at 4:40. As soon as that one finishes, it's time for the Calculus exam at 6:50. Hopefully the first exam won't go too late, because I'd actually like to have time for dinner. There's no rest for the weary, because after my second exam, it's time to start studying for the Mythology exam, which takes place at 10:10 on Tuesday morning. After writing lots of essays about the Trojan war, it's time to start the process of studying for my Statisics exam, held at 4:40 that same day. And just when you think it's time for a rest, right after dinner on Tuesday, I have to start studying for my Greek exam, the hardest of the bunch, which happens at 6:50 on Wednesday. I get my first real break of the week after that exam, because my sixth, and final exam, doesn't take place until 10:10 on Friday. Ah, the joys of being a Computer Science Major. If I don't die from exhaustion, I'll be here at the end of the week, with lots of clever things to post.

Link of the Day: Upcoming Movies - This is a pretty cool site that Samoht told me about, and it will prove quite useful, since I plan to see two movies a week this summer, on Fridays and Saturdays. Hopefully I won't have to repeat too many movies, though I won't mind too much. I absolutely love seeing movies in the theater.

I've worked on it most of the day, and I'm finally amost finsihed adding those style sheets. This is a lot more work than my previous changes, but from this point forward, I should be able to completely change the layout in a few short minutes. I played a little bit of Lunar today, and actually managed not to di, which is an impressive feat for me lately. I had a Stats review session at 3:00, which means I can study a little be less Tuesday afternoon. Finaly, Llon, Neevred, Esor, and I watched Run Lola Run today, which I've added a review of. I gave it a 9, which isn't suprising, since I give everything a good review. I hope to finish the work on my site tomorrow, but I might decide to study instead. Only time will tell.

I'm currently in the middle of adding style sheets to my site, and since it's so easy to change things around with them, I've decided to change the site's layout a bit. I got tired of white on black, so the site is now black on off-white. Since the only two colors I use are red and purple, those can stay the same. I've also gotten rid of Comic Sans MS in favor of Trebuchet MS. Comic Sans was really starting to bug me, since the default letters are so darned big. Also, Trebuchet is just a really cool name, reminiscent of medieval catapults. Finally, I've decided not to underline links anymore. Instead, they'll just be blue, so that you can distinguish them from regular text.

I took some more on-line surveys today, so I figured I'd post the results here. There might be another post coming later tonight, but since my weekend plans consist of playing Lunar as long as possible, then reluctantly studying for finals, not much exciting will happen. Esor and Neevred are planning to rent some lame French movie, and while I'm fairly sure that they'll like it, at this point, they're pretty much required to. I really need to make some more friends, so that I have more than one option for fun on the weekends.

I Am A: Neutral Good Elf Mage

Neutral Good characters believe in the power of good above all else. They will work to make the world a better place, and will do whatever is necessary to bring that about, whether it goes for or against whatever is considered 'normal'.

Elves are the eldest of all races, although they are generally a bit smaller than humans. They are generally well- cultured, artistic, easy-going, and because of their long lives, unconcerned with day-to-day activities that other races frequently concern themselves with. Elves are, effectively, immortal, although they can be killed. After a thousand years or so, they simply pass on to the next plane of existance.

Mages harness the magical energies for their own use. Spells, spell books, and long hours in the library are their loves. While often not physically strong, their mental talents can make up for this.

Well, it's 7:00 in the morning, and I'm still up. I'm going to head over to breakfast in about half an hour, and then it's off to Calculus, my only class of the day. The minute I get in the door, at around 8:55, it's right to bed for me. My plan to play Lunar all night didn't go quite as planned though, because I forgot the cardinal rule of RPGs. Not only did I neglect to save at every oppertunity, I neglected to save for almost three hours. Naturally, I ended up getting killed, and the prospect of redoing an entire three hours of gameplay was too depressing to consider. I played for about an hour longer, then got fed up with it. At this point, I'm reluctantly counting down the hours until Sunday afternoon, wheN I have to start studing for my boatload of finals. From about 2:00 Sunday until 9:00 Wednesday, I'll be doing very little besides eating, sleeping, studying, and taking finals. After Wednesday I get a small break, since my last exam isn't until Friday, and it's the one that will require the least studying. I think I might actually start work on a computer game this summer, since the mindless job I'll be working will give me plenty of time to think of ideas.

For whatever reason, one of Akira's friends from home has decided to give up video games, along with smoking, and meat. To celebrate his early mid-life crisis, he is giving away all of his PlayStation games. One of the games he gave away was Lunar: Silver Star Story Complete, which I've desperately wanted to play, since I got Lunar 2: Eternal Blue last summer. It just got here today, and as such, don't expect to see me post too much in the future. I'm going to be trying rather hard to beat the game before the semester is over, which only gives me about 10 days. I'm up to the challenge though.

I downloaded Opera the web browser yestrday, and while I'm impressed with it in some respects, in other ways, it leaves much to be desired. For instance, the window I'm typing in right now is only ten characters wide. Though it doesn't really affect my typing in any way, it's kind of annoying. Also, I've been having trouble using Java applets lately, which is a real shame, since Yahoo games open up in Java windows. Besides these problems, Opera is still pretty cool. It lets you turn off images with the press of a button, and if you're viewing a really obnoxious webpage, you can turn off their fonts and backgrounds. Yellow on blue too hard on your eyes? Hit a button, and make it black on white... the way it was meant to be. As it is, I'll probably use Opera for everything but posting to my site, and playing Yahoo games. And since I have an overwhelming lack of ability playing hearts, I'll probably be tired of Yahoo games soon.

Well, it's time for another quiz, because, well, I've decided to take one.

You are Kermit!
Though you're technically the star, you're pretty mellow and don't mind letting others share the spotlight. You are also something of a dreamer.

My watch stopped today, so I have to go get that fixed. Luckily, it's Free Cone Day over at Ben & Jerry's, so I'll be out on the town anyway.

Well, it turns out that Checkers isn't the only game I suck at. I've been playing Backgammon and Hearts over at Yahoo. I've only played three games of Hearts, but I've lost every single one. It's still my favorite card game, but it might not be for much longer. On the backgammon side of things, I've played 11 games and lost 6. So a losing record there too, but not by much... perhaps tomorrow will be better for me.

Well, I saw Gosford Park last night, and while I didn't hate it, I would have liked it a lot more if I had been able to understand a single word of dialogue. I guess it's because of my sheltered Pennsylvania lifestyle, but I have a very difficult time understanding British accents. I had the same problem with Billy Elliot and Snatch, which made it very difficult for me to enjoy either of those movies. I the moive again though, provided I can find one with closed captioning, so that I can actually follow the plot. Other than that, my weekend was pretty uneventful. I played a lot of video games and read a lot, and just today, when it couldn't be put off any longer, I reluctantly did some homework. But if you consider my video game exploits noteworthy, as any true nerd would, I finally beat Paladin's Quest and got my Archer up to level 99 in Gauntlet. I've just started playing Robotrek, which is another Super Nintendo gamey by Enix, and I'm thinking of giving Serious Sam 2 a try. Akira's friend has just provided me with my very on copy of Lunar I, provided that I pay the postage. I'm more than willing to, of course, and in a week or so, I should have yet another gaming option. I'll need lots of games to play this summer, as on weekdays, I often prefer to home after work, rather than spend a few measly hours hanging out.

I just lost a game of Internet Checkers, and I'm supremely embarassed. For some reason, I always forget the rule that you have to jump your oponnent's piece if possible. The guy I was playing against apparently knew this rule though, becuase he kept forcing me to capture his pieces, and then proceeded to double-jump me. Okay, he only did that once, and it was pretty much my fault, but it makes me sound less pathetic if I pretend I was destroyed by a checkers expert. On-line Checkers is a game I didn't have this morning, thanks to the events described below.

I was sitting in Statistics today, trying my best not to pay attention, when I got the sudden urge to format my computer. Luckily I've got two hard drives, so it was an easy process to move all of my save files, MP3s, and Roms to my second drive. Unfortunately, doing a clean install for Windows XP is a very complicated process. Microsoft decided to finally break ties with DOS when they made XP, and if a program even thinks about running in DOS, Windows deletes it. As such, formatting wasn't as simple as rebooting into dos and typing "Format C:". Supposedly you can make a boot disk to handle such things, but after searching around on-line a bit, it proved far too complicated for me, so I took the coward's way out. I installed Windows XP on my F drive, and booted from it. From there I formatted my C drive, which was a little difficult since there was a 2 GB block of data I couldn't access for mysterious reasons. Once the C drive was formatted, I re-installed Windows XP on it. Then when my computer started up again, I deleted the Windows folder from my F drive. With only a few hours of work, I had my computer the way it was this morning, minus all of my games and a couple gigs of random stuff. Unfortunatley, I ended up installing Windows XP four times, because I'm immensely stupid. I read a book that Llon lent me and watched Conan O'Brien to pass the time, so all was not lost.

Llahned and I watched Monster's Ball tonight, and while I enjoyed the film quite a bit, I saw a little more of Halle Berry than I really needed to. I've certainly got nothing against seeing naked women, but after a few times, watching her make passionate love to Billy Bob got a little old. Supposedly she was self-conscious about appearing topless in Swordfish a while back... it seems she got over her inhibitions. Lately, the clothes are off as soon as she walks onto a movie set. Apparently she's also going to be topless in the newest Bond movie, which will bump the rating up to R. This is a huge disappointment to Samoht, who doesn't like the idea of younger Bond fans being screwed out of seeing the latest installment in the saga. I might write a review for the film... have to see how I'm feeling tomorrow afternoon.

I discovered this site last November, and promptly alerted my mom of potential Christmas gifts. Thanks to my dutiful internet borwsing, I scored a really cool T-shirt with "Sky and Water" on it, and a desk calendar featuring pictures on weekdays, and quotes for the weekends. Apparently the name MC Escher is trademarked by Cordon Art BV, so I might get in trouble for using it. Seriously... it's pretty absurd to see the guy's name with a little tm in the upper corner.

For a day with only one class, I've been pretty busy today. I was late to calculus, as usual, but I finished the homework last night, and handed it in today. And that's what really matters, right? After Calc I played a little Paladin's Quest, then took a short nap. At 11:00 it was time for lunch, after which I headed over to the computer lab. Xof met me there around noon, and we worked on Stats until 3:30. I've been messing around on-line since then, and now it's almost time to go to dinner. I'm meeting Ellar at 6:30, in a completely different computer lab to work on some CSE homework. I'll be working with him until around 10:00, then it's back to my room to do some Mythology homework and study for the last Greek quiz of the semester. So I've still got a good chunk of work ahead of me, but all I have to do this weekend is finish up that 331 assignment with Ellar, and do a little bit of Greek translation with Xof... but Greek homework can never be avoided.

I've got to start waking up about 20 minutes earlier, because every day this week, when I went to take a shower, there was no hot water. The cold shower was actually quite refreshing though, since it's quite hot out right now. I've heard rumors that it's going to cool down tomorrow, and I can't wait. I've been carrying around a Mountain Dew bottle full of water lately, and it's really helping me get the 8 glasses a day that everybody says you're supposed to get. I drain that thing two or three times a day, which is 60 ounces right there. There will be no dehydration for me this summer, thank you very much. Speaking of summer, I finalized the details on my job yesterday, and they're going to be giving me $9.00 an hour, insead of the $8.00 I was expecting. Maybe the extra money will encourage me not to goof off so much this year. Also, my pinky hurts, and I don't know why. Whenever I have to hit the right shift key, or the letter p, I get a small stabbing pain in my finger... not a good thing. I suppose it will get better in a couple days though... nothing much to worry about.

Link of the Day: Progress Quest - This is a pretty cool website I found last week, featuring an RPG that plays itself. You get all the fun of leveling, gaining new spells and equipment, and slaying monsters, without the foreboding prospect of death. That's right... all you do is automatically slay monsters (you can't die) and loot their corpses. When your inventory gets full, you head back to the nearest town, sell everything, buy new equipment, and the cycle repeats itself. It's only slightly more fun than watching your harddrive defragment, but since it runs in the backrougn, there's no reason not to do it. My character is a Gyrognome Robot Monk, and my favorite spell is Animate Nightstand... though Holy Batbole is rpetty good too. I'm currenlty wielding a +29 Dancing Vicious Poleaxe... not that it matters, since the monsters never fight back. At the very least, Progress Quest is an amusing parody of RPGs, so give it a look if you're bored.

Sorry about the lack of posting lately, though I'm not even sure if anybody is even reading this site anymore. The internet was down last night until early this morning, but not in the whole building for some reason. Just my half of my floor. The outage affected less than twenty rooms, and mine just happened to be one of them. Luckily I didn't need the internet for anything important recently, or else I would have been quite upset. I'm glad that's it's finally nice out on a regular basis, but we seem to have skipped spring. Just a few weeks ago it was freezing outside, and now it's hot. My ideal weather is warm, which a slight breeze, and some clouds. Actually, there only needs to be one cloud, as long as it stays permanantly in front of the sun. I've got nothing against natural light, except when it's blinding me. We're getting to the end of the line in most of my classes, and by Saturday I'll be finished all of the work for half of my classes. Unfortunatley, Calculus, Mythology, and Greek will continue to have homework up until the very end. Speaking of homework, I've gotta go read books 9 and 10 of the Aeneid... whee.

Now, I've got nothing much against cold showers, but they really suck when all you want in the morning is some nice hot water. I don't know if there's a problem with the Atherton water heater, or if every person in the dorm decided to take a shower at once, but the hot water is all gone. On the up side, my shower only took a few minutes, since I wanted to get out of there as soon as possible...

I could barely keep my eyes opened during Mythology and Greek today, so to celebrate, I skipped all of my afternoon classes. I probably should have done something useful with my newfound free time, but instead I whiled away the day with Worms World Party, Arthur C. Clarke, and Gauntlet: Dark Legacy. The only useful thing I did today was to buy a new pair of shorts for sleeping and showering. I had my old pair of shorts when I started my laundry last night, but by the time I was finished, they were gone. I've lost socks before, but never a pair of shorts. It was a $12 mistake that I don't hope to repeat, but at least the shorts are comfortable. I got a call from my mom today, letting me know that one of the Daves contaced my house, wondering if I wanted to work at VF again. I'm glad they called me, because I forgot to get a phone number at the end of last summer. The pay is $8.00, same as I got last year, and while I'd prefer a higher paying job (who wouldn't?), this will have to do. I'm considering looking for somebody to hire me to work on Saturdays, though eight hours a week is hardly a good reson to put somebody on a pay roll. I would be able to work on Sundays, except that I usually spend the day going to church and catching a movie with Eeldi. A couple friends from home are visiting Llon today and tomorrow, to watch Moving On, a concert-like event held on the HUB lawn. I've got nothing against free music, but it's kind of annoying that it's so close to my room. Fortunately I'll be doing homework, where any distraction is more than welcome. My little brother finally god his driver's lisence yesterday, which means he'll be able to drive me around this summer. I be he'll be thrilled. I actually have little hope of him actually being my chaffeur, but a guy can dream. My plans for the evening consist of playing Bingo with Llahned, though afterwards I plan to catch up with Llon and the rest of my friends. They're watching Vanilla Sky right now, which just doesn't appeal to me. There's still a chance I'll see it on Sunday, since it's free... but only time will tell.

Well, I handed in my Mythology paper today, and while it's not award winning, it's finished, and that's what really counts. Whit this assignment out of the way, I've got nothing major to worry about until finals week... when I have six exams. That's going to be a very stressful five days, but at least I have a few easy weeks to get ready for it. I went to RigaTony's again today, which is a dining option offered at Pollock Halls. They've got bread, salad, pizza, and pasta... everything you need for a quality meal. Unfortunately, RigaTony's is so good that everybody wants to go. We got in line around 5:30, and didn't start eating until a little after six. I plan to enjoy Italian cuisine at least two times a week, but I'll have to make a point to leave earlier. Or I could just not eat pasta so often, but that's not really an option. I'm still playing Gauntlet during most of my free time, but I'm becoming rather disenchanted with it. After maxing out my Wizard and my Valkyrie, I just don't have the energy to get my Archer to level 99. I might start playing Dark Cloud again, or perhaps I'll get back into my SNES roms. No matter what I choose in my video game adventures, rest assued that I'll be playing Worms World Party. I absolutely loved Works Armageddon, and the next game in the series is living up to my expectations in all ways save one. While there are plenty of training missions, they don't reward you with meda.s so I have absolutely no motivation to complete them. But if the worst of my problems today are video game related, it's been a pretty good day. Tomorrow won't be as care free, but it will be a heck of a lot better than yesterday was.

You'd be suprised how long it takes to read twenty webcomics without it. Feel free to use it for you own benefit. I won't mind.

I was making a post here earlier today, but for some reason, I decided to close the window. Rather than try to remember what I was writing, I'll just re-cap. Calculus sucks, Statistics sucks, and Greek sucks, all for different reasons. Tomorrow, I'll be of a similar opinion about Mythology and CSE 465. I haven't actually started writing my 5-7 page paper on Odysseus, but I already have nearly three pages of outline. Hopefully the actual writing process will be as trivial as I imagine it will be, as I'd liked to spend no more than four hours writing it. I'm willing to spend six or seven hours if I have to though, a the sacrifice of valuable Gauntlet time. I'm currently trying to download the all of the songs The Cranberries ever released, but iMesh isn't cooperating. Usually I'm able to get onto the big server, which often has 500,000 people on it. Lately I've only been able to get on dinky servers, with 400 people, tops. It's very difficult to find B-sides when nobody is on-line.

I just started reading Arthur C. Clarke last night, and so far I'm loving it. I've got a book of his collected short stories, and quite a few of them were originally published on pornography magazines. Of course, before that, they were published as pulp fiction, in magazines like Amazing Stories, or Amateur Science Fiction. But if you were a gek back in the sixties, Playboy was the way to go. Porn and sci fi, in one handy package. Who could ask for more? I also finalized my schedule for next semester, and I've decided to give up on the Greek minor. Instead, I'm going to use the free space in my schedule to take random literature classes. I'm going to be taking a Black Americain Literature class with Neevred, even though he won't be getting credit for it. He's auditing the class, which means the teacher gives you permission to sit in and participate, but you don't get any credit for it. As it is right now. I'm going to have class from 11:15 - 2:15 four days a week. Luckily there's a place that starts serving lunch at 10:30, so I should still be able to get food at a reasonable hour.

There was a poker tournament at the HUB tonight, and since my plans would have otherwise consisted of playing video games while I avoid writing my paper, I decided to go. The tournament was supposed to start at 10:00, but they weren't set up by then. By the time they got all the tables rearranged and ran to Wal-Mart to get chips, it was almost 11:00. There were about 30 people playing, and there were three rounds, one hour each. I managed to get all the way to the end, and took second place. Unfortunately, second doesn't win a DVD, so I ended up with yet another ten pack of CD-Rs. I've got like 20 of those bastards lying around, and I don't even have a use for them. I'm thinking of asking for a Discman that reads MP3s for my birthday though, so I might find a use for them eventually. It doesn't get much better than 12 hours of music on one disc. The Poker tournament was a lot of fun though, and I learned a whole bunch of different variations, mostly from this one guy who took the game way too seriously. You'd think he was from Vegas, because he totally flipped out when we used the wrong name for deals. Dealer got to call the game, and this one girl always called Five Card Stud. But apparently it was really Five Card Nothing, because when you really play Stud games, you get two cards face down (your hand), and the rest go face up. You bet every time a new round of face up cards is dealt. Apparently it requires a lot more stragety, because you can sort of see what the other players have. My favorite version, which we've billed the Penn State Late Night, is a seven card game, with no draw. Five cards are dealt to each player, and then there's a round of bidding. Then two more cards are dealt to each player, and they bid again. There's a little stragety involved, but not too awful much, and I like it a lot. Of course, I would have enjoyed the game a lot less if we had been using real money.

I'm feeling a little better about the RA thing, thanks to a few choice things going my way the rest of the day. Ellar and I worked for six hours on our CSE 331 assignment, and we pretty much have it finished. Except to the "set not equal to" command, which isn't all that important anyway. I got my grade back for my second Stats exam today, and I got a perfect! If you combine that with my first exam, my average soars up to a 76. Fortunately the teacher has an awesome make-up policy for the first exam, so my average will be some where closer to 87% or so. I might actually be able to pull off an A in that class, if the final goes as well as the second midterm. Considering I was expecting to get a B at best, this isn't a bad turn of events. And the final piece of good news is that I got my Valkyrie up to level 50 in Gauntlet today. It feels like only yesterday that I was getting my Wizard to level 99. The fact that it was yesterday detracts absolutely nothing from my nostaligia. Well, it's almost 2:00 in the morning, and I'm about to sleep the sweet sleep of no Greek tomorrow. It's going to be wonderful.

Link of the Day: The Boondocks - Lately I've been reading the archives of Aaron McGruder's hilarious comic strip over at uComics, which I also use to get my Foxtrot and Calvin & Hobbes fix. The link I provided is to the first Boondocks comic printed, so that you too can enjoy the entire archives.

Well, I finally got a responce back from Residence LIfe today, and it seems that I'm not cut out to be an RA. Leah brought the letter down between classes, and it's amazing how high your hopes can get before you read the carefully phrased message, "You suck." They were much more polite about it though, and they even "encourage me to reapply in September." Maybe in a few months I'll be better able to bullshit my way into their carbon copy RA mold. I never really thought I had much of a chance of becoming an RA anyway, but by this point in the process, I thought maybe I was defying all odds. Now comes the difficult process of finding enough money to continue attending college. I was really counting on the free room and board that the RA position would provide. And since IBM elected not to call me back, I'm really in bad shape. Guess I'll have to work a lot this summer...

I finally beat Icewind Dale yesterday, and while it's good to actually finish a game for a change, it took me a while to figure out what I was going to play next. Thank sto Trebor's visit, I've been playing a lot of Gauntlet, and while it's a good time to be sure, it gets old after a while. Especially since I've played through the entire game many times, what with the arcade, rentals, and owning the PS2 game. After careful deliberation, I decided to start playing Deus Ex today, insead of doing my calculus homework. I enjoyed Half-Life well enough, and I was pretty good at it eventually, but so far, I totally suck at Deus Ex. In the training missions alone, I lost my legs twice. I lost them the first time learning how to us LAMs, which are explosive little proximity mines that they give to all agents. A repair bot fixed me right up, though for a while I was waddling around on stumps. The second time I lost my legs was more idiotic, as I decided to pick up a crate of TNT and drop it right in front of me. To make matters worse the second time around, there was a guard robot trying to shoot my head off, while I'm moving at the approximate pace of a turtle. I eventually got through those training missions, and I can only hope I manage to keep my legs attached when I play the actual game.

Currently Listening to: REM - The Apolgoist
Link of the Day: Legodeath - This is a random little site that Llon showed me today, and it's pretty darn amusing. It shows a whole bunch of different ways to die, depiced in legos, of course. My favories are "It's Probably Just the Wind" and "Who Let the Monkeys Out?". So check out the site, and have the most fun with legos you've had since you were ten.

I haven't done my Greek homework yet, but I have a good scheme to get it done in time. Instead of working on it now, like I usually do, I'm going to go to sleep. Then tomorrow morning, instead of messing around on the computer between classes, I'm going to head to the HUB after calculus. I'll get the homework done then, after sleeping for eight hours tonight. Hopefully this works, and I'm not tired tomorrow afternoon. I've got a Greek exam on Wednesday, which will require a lot of studying tomorrow night. I'm not looking forward to that. Thanks to Trebor, I've given up my ban on pirating music. He downloaded iMesh on my computer while he was here, and I've been using in my spare time. So far I've picked up eight of the REM songs I've been missing, and I"ve only got about twenty more left to get. I'm also expecting to find out about the RA position this week, and it had better be soon, because I'm sick of checking my mail box every two minutes.
