This band from Boston had only two official releases both after the original band had already broken up. This live CD recorded at a Harvard University student dance in 1971 and at “The sleazy confines of the Long Branch Saloon in Berkeley” attended by “aging flower children and assorted burnouts” as described by bassist Ernie Brooks in the liner notes of this 1994 release. Playing Garage Rock and also Punk and New Wave 5 years before those terms were used. With Jonathan Richman’s unusual voice and phrasing they were an odd band. Many of these songs deal with dating and living in Boston. This is a cool CD with Richman giving an explanation of most songs . They cover the Velvet Underground song “Foggy Bottom: with Richman doing his best Lou Reed. Not all songs are rockers, there are the slower ballad types like “Hospital” and “Tenderness”. “Pablo Picasso” has some nice jamming from the band. The CD ends with their best known song, the much covered “Roadrunner” a really great early Punk song. The original band broke up in early ’74. Jonathan Richman may be best known for his role as troubadour in the film There’s Something About Mary. Keyboard man Jerry Harrison joined The Talking Heads and drummer David Robinson joined The Cars.
