This is a 3 CD box set from Century Media. I fell in love with Heavy Metal riffing after buying Black Sabbath’s Paranoid in 1970, one of the first records I bought. The music on these CDs cover all the sub-genres that evolved from that band. This is a nice box set with the 3 CDs, one of Western Hemisphere bands on one of Eastern Hemisphere. The third disc is composed of rare and unreleased tracks from both hemispheres. There is also a 90 page booklet with photos, stories and comments from band members and people who work at Century Media and a complete discography of U.S. releases on the label. I had a fairly large collection of Heavy Metal on cassettes and CDs, but were all sold in 2013. I decided to listen to disc 3. Of the 18 tracks I had CDs of 12 of these bands. Songs by Samael from Switzerland and Tiamat from Sweden have a Doom Metal sound most like Black Sabbath’s. Stuck Mojo’s “Fuckin’ for $$$” is more of a Rap/Hardcore song. Moonspell’s “Ataegina” adds a Keltic touch to their Metal. The Gathering, a Dutch band, with the lovely vocals of Anna Maria van Giersbergen adds some electronics to their music. I believe I had 3 CDs of theirs. Krisiun, from Brazil, is a Death Metal band with their usual growling vocals as is Morgoth from Germany. Melodic Metal bands like Iced Earth from the U.S. and Arch Enemy from Sweden contribute more accessible tracks. A good CD and sometime I will have to listen to the other 2.
