z Z Top-Deguello

Another great record and along with Tres Hombres and Tejas one of Z Z Top’s best. This came out on 1979 and was another one I recorded off the radio in 1980. This was the time I was living on Pyle St. with my partner in crime Jeff and his sister, younger brother and father who was hardly ever there. Jeff’s sister and her boyfriend stole some of my albums causing me to move them to the house were Jeff’s girlfriend and her sister lived with their mother in New Castle. The four of us had some wild times in the 9 or 10 months I stayed there, Because of that the only music we had to listen to were the tapes of albums I recorded off the radio. This one was a favorite and listened to many times at the house and in the car. I bought this used record at the Ephrata store for $4 about ten years ago. The record and cover are in very good shape. Really like every song on this one. “I Thank You” is a song written by Isaac Hayes and a hit for Sam And Dave in ’68. “I’m Bad ,I’m Nationwide” and “A Fool For Your Stockings” are also favorites. “Manic Mechanic” was another one we always liked which used a pitch shifter on Billy’s voice and is kind of a novelty song. Side two starts with “Dust My Broom” credited to Elmore James on my original pressing but later editions have Robert Johnson as the writer. Billy Gibbons of course plays slide guitar on this one. Fleetwood Mac covered this in their early Blues days also credited to Elmore James who recorded it in 1951. Two short songs “Lowdown In The Street” and “Hi Fi Mama” are followed by “Cheap Sunglasses” another hit for the band with a long guitar fade out. “Esther Be The One” closes the album. More great inventive guitar playing by Billy Gibbons and backup by Dusty Hill And Frank Beard. Hill and Gibbons are starting to let their beards grow longer at this point. All three members are credited as playing sax on this record.
