Yes-Yes

Yes was formed in London in 1968 by members of other bands most notably Mabel Greer’s Toy Shop. Chris Squire, Peter Banks, Jon Anderson, and Bill Bruford had all been in that band at one time. Keyboardist Tony Kaye had been in a band called The Federals since 1963. This is their first album from July of 1969. This is a Record Store Day reissue from 2019 on orange vinyl. It’s a reproduction of the U.K. gatefold cover. I remember looking at the U.S, release which had a different cover sometime in 1970 at a department store. On the back someone had written about a poll on Melody Maker magazine about the two bands most likely to make it big in the 70’s. One was Led Zeppelin, the other was yes. I had heard of Zeppelin but not Yes. This is on the inside of the U.K. release. Since I was still listening to AM Top 40 radio then I didn’t buy it. after a year or two later when I discovered FM radio I heard some of these songs. Most were written by Anderson and Squire, there are two covers “Every Little Thing” by Lennon/McCartney and “I See You” a Byrds cover and my favorite on the record. “Yesterday And Today” and “Sweetness” were more like Pop songs while “Survival”, “Harold Land”, and “Beyond And Before” were more Progressive. It’s rather confusing since the U.S. cover of this album is the cover of the reissue of Time And A World their next album.
