A great anthology from 2018. This covers the first two decades of the band with at least one song from their first 17 albums. Originally a two CD set with 33 songs there are 25 on this two record vinyl release. I haven’t added it all up but there must be around 100 minutes of music on here. Some of the times listed on the record label are wrong. “July Morning” listed as an edit of 3:15 duration is actually the whole 10 minute song where as “The Wizard” a song less the three minutes long is listed as 14:09. The first record has songs from their first five records which I own. The first two songs on record two are from Return To Fantasy which I sold. The final 11 songs are ones I had never heard before. Many of them sound very un Heep-like with songs that could be called Soul, R&B, and Pop. Songs like “Firefly”, “Free’N’Easy” and “Come Back To Me” aren’t bad songs but not Uriah Heep. Even the more rocking songs recorded after Mick Box reformed the band in 1980 with a new line-up they sound more like Billy Squire, Foreigner, or Def Leppard. Although not a gatefold cover there are liner notes and commentary by Mick Box, who compiled these tracks, and Ken Hensley from 2016 on the two record sleeves. Even Hensley said their music from ’76 to ’80 was not their best and the reason why he left the band in 1980. Since the grooves are so compressed with at least 25 minutes per side you have to turn this one up loud to appreciate it. This is another one I bought at FYE that was discounted because the corners of the cover were bent. This looks to be an import only released in the U.K. and Europe.
