Stone The Crows-Ode To John Law

The second album from this Scottish band. This is an original 1970 issue I bought in 1989 at Plastic Fantastic on The Main Line. In ’89 I was living in Upper Darby and visited the store a few times. This is a really great album of Blues Rock with a bit of Progressive leanings. Singer Maggie Bell has a raspy voice not unlike Janis Joplin’s and sang background vocals on the title track of Rod Stewart’s Every Picture Tells A Story album. Side one has three great songs each around six and a half minutes. They all have great guitar and organ solos. I have played this side many many times even recently. Side two is almost as good. The Title Track is a more Progressive track with some odd instrumentation and the last song “Danger Zone” is a great Blues number. It’s a cover written by Percy Mayfield but credited to Curtis Mayfield on the record label. Bassist and background vocalist James Dewar later joined Robin Trower’s first band. Guitarist Les Harvey, brother of Alex Harvey, was electrocuted during a concert when he picked up an ungrounded mic while touching the strings of his guitar in 1972. The band broke up after that. The inside of the gatefold cover is an example of 60’s Pop Art
