The Smiths-Meat Is Murder

A great band from Manchester England. This is their second album from 1985. I had all four of their albums plus a compilation album and their live album, sold them all but one in 2013. The original U.S. release I bought in 1985 had the single “How Soon Is Now” added to it, one of their best songs. This 2011 reissue is the U.K. version that doesn’t have it. Led by singer Morrissey and guitarist Johnny Marr with Andy Rourke and Mike Joyce providing the rhythm, they played a basic guitar, bass and drums music without the synthesizers so prevalent in the 80’s,with Morrissey’s often depressing lyrics. Many great songs on this record. “The Headmaster Ritual” starts off side one followed by four more tracks . The four on side two are also very good “Nowhere Fast”,”Well I Wonder”, the Funky “Barbarism Begins At Home”, and ending with the title track, a Vegan anthem of sorts, with cows mooing at the start and end of the song. My favorite of the four they released.
