Red House Painters-Down Colorful Hill

I don’t remember how I got turned on to this band, their music is hardly played on the radio, but sometime in the early 2000’s I bought their second release on CD and ended up buying every CD they made. They were all sold in 2013 except for the Retrospective CD which I still have.In 2015 all their albums were reissued on vinyl. This is the first release from this band led by singer/songwriter Mak Kozelek. There music has been described as Slowcore for its downbeat tempos, bleak or moody lyrics and simple arrangements. Six demos that secured them a recording contract with 4AD these songs are very personal and emotional utilizing just drums, bass and guitar(mostly acoustic). Two of the songs are around ten minutes in length. “Down Colorful Hill” has minimul lyrics but a long repeated fade out that is quite good while “Medicine Bottle” is an amazing song about a relationship that went bad. Lots of lyrics in this one although they are not printed ,it’s a rather depressing song but one of their best. “Michael” is about a lost friend. “Lord Kill The Pain” is the most upbeat song on the record although the lyrics are not. “24” and “Japanese To English” are also good. A good glimpse of what would come from one of my favorite bands.
