The Alan Parsons Project-Tales Of Mystery And Imagination

Original

The Alan Parsons Project was an ever changing group of musicians and singers put together by Alan Parsons an engineer and producer who worked on The Beatles Abbey Road and Pink Floyd,s Dark Side Of The Moon. Along with Eric Woolfson they composed songs relating to stories by Edgar Allan Poe. Inside the gatefold cover is a chronology of Poe,s life and an eight page booklet with photos, lyrics, and quotes from Poe’s stories. Most of the musicians are from the band Ambrosia with John Miles and Arthur Brown doing the vocals. Cover is by Hipgnosis. Side one ,which is what I always listened to starts with an instrumental followed by “The Raven” with Parsons singing through a vocoder, one of the first uses of that instrument. “The Tell-Tale Heart” is sung by Arthur Brown with his trademark screaming while “The Cask Of Amontillado” and “(The System Of)Dr. Tarr And Professor Fether” are sung by John Miles. The later is the best song on the record. Side two is taken up with a nearl 16 minute instrumental “The Fall Of The House Of Usher”. Based on a piece by Debussy the first seven minutes are orchestral before being interrupted by a thunderstorm then going into a keyboard, drum and bass section ,familiar to anyone who has listened to their next album I Robot, before going into the final song “To One In Paradise” sung by Terry Sylvester of The Hollies.
