Mudcrutch were a band formed by Tom Petty,Mike Campbell,Randall Marsh,Tom Leadon, brother of Bernie Leadon of the Eagles, in Gainsville ,Florida in 1970. Benmont Tench joined in 1972. They played locally in Florida and Georgia before breaking up in 1975 having recorded only one single. In 1976 Petty,Campbell, and Tench formed The Heartbreakers. In 2007 Petty re-formed the band and put out this record, recorded live in the studio in ten days as it says on the back cover. The music sounds much like The Heartbreakers. There are two traditional songs done in a traditional style “Shady Grove” and an instrumental “June Apple”,and two covers “Six Days On The Road” and The Byrds “Lover Of The Bayou”. There are a couple of Country flavored songs “Orphan Of The Storm”,and “Queen Of The Go-Go Girls”,but the best song on the record is the nine and a half minute “Crystal River” with a nice long Grateful Dead style jam in the middle. I bought this in 2008 when it was released, its a two record gatefold album.
