McDonald & Giles-McDonald & Giles

A 1971 release from two original members of King Crimson. Ian McDonald plays guitar, keyboards, sax, clarinet, flute and zither. Michael Giles plays drums and percussion plus saw and whistle. His brother Peter, who was in a pre- Crimson band called Ciles,Giles, and Fripp plays bass. The musc is similar to King Crimson but not as aggressive as some of their music. Some of it has a Canterbury Scene sound to it. All fairly long songs except for the Pop sounding “Is She Waiting” and “Flight Of The Ibis” that sounds like Crimson’s “Cadance And Cascade”. The 11 minute “Suite In C” , that features Steve Winwood on piano, and the 7 minute “Tomorrows People-The Children Of Today” are typical Progressive Rock songs with plenty of NcDonalds flute. The side long “Birdman” was written in 1968 with lyrics by Pete Sinfield and parts of it were performed live by King Crimson in their early days. The song is about British aviation pioneer Alliot Roe in six parts that all seem unrelated. A good progressive record and one I bought in the early 90’s at a record store on Cottman Ave. near the Roosevelt Mall when I was living in Philly. An original issue, it is pretty scratchy throughout but no skips. It has since been re-issued on pink vinyl.
