John Mayall-The Turning Point

After Mick Taylor, the trhird guitarist for The Bluesbreakers left to join The Rolling Stones in 1969 ,Mayall decided to form a new band that played “Low Volume” music with no lead guitar or drums. With Mayall on vocals and harmonica,Steve Thompson on bass he added Jon Mark on finger style acoustic guitar, playing mostly rhythm, and Johnny Almond on sax and flute. According to the extensive liner notes Mayall said they had only played together for four weeks and after a few shows in Europe they came to the U.S. to play at The Filmore East in June of 1969 where this album was recorded. Featuring all new songs there is plenty of soloing ,in a more Jazz vein than Blues, mostly Johnny Almond on sax and flute. All very mellow sounding “The Laws Must Change”,”California” and “Thoughts About Roxanne” are all standout tracks but the most memorable song on the record is “Room To Move” one that was played quite often on WMMR and my school radio station in the early 70’s. With heavy harmonica and Mayall doing his “Chicka Chicka” bit it’s one of his most well know songs. I originall found this record in a storage cage in my first apartment that I lived in with three brothers after moving out of my parents house in 1978. A former tenant had left some junk in there and there were a few records in a box. Most of them I didn’t know or wanted but when I saw this one I picked it up. Although it was in pretty bad shape it became a fovorite at the apartment especially “Room To Move”. I later threw that record out but bought this used one about 20 years ago. It’s an original pressing from 1969 and still had the folder that came with it with photos and lyrics. The cover and record are in good shape.
