This is the soundtrack to the documentary about the life of Jaco Pastorius, the amazing and innovative bass player who died in 1987. The movie was produced by Robert Trujillo, bass player for Metallica. I first head Jaco’s bass on Joni Mitchell’s Hejira album in 1975. This two record set has some great compositions on it. Everything from Jazz to Funk to Rock is represented here. There are four songs from his first record,”Teen Town” and “Portrait Of Tracy” being excellent pieces and “River People” from Weather Report another great one all on side one. Side two has “The Dry Cleaner From Des Moines” by Joni Mitchell and “All American Alien Boy ” from Ian Hunter both of which he played bass. Side three has more from his solo records ad Weather report and a moving song by his daughter Mary and written by Mary and Chuck Doom called”Longing”. this song is going on my playlist. Side four has covers of his compositions by rapper Tech N9ne,Crosses,a band with Chuck Doom and Chino Moreno the singer for Deftones. Acoustic duo Rodrigo Y Gabriela do an amazing cover of “Continuum” from his first record from 1976. Jaco Pastorius suffered from Bi-Polar disorder and drug addiction. Tragically on September 11 1987 he broke into a bar in Florida after being refused entrance and was beaten by a club employee. He was hospitalized and later died of a brain hemorrhage at the age of 35.
