Various Artists-Sunday Nights

A tribute album of songs by Junior Kimbrough who was a blues singer who ran a juke joint in the backwoods of Mississippi. He died in 1998 and put out three or four albums in the last six years of is life. This came out on CD in 2005. This is a limited edition on blue semi-transparent vinyl that came out on Record Store Day 2016. The Black Keys recorded a six song EP of his songs and in the liner notes of that record Dan Auerbach tell how listening to one of Kimbrough’s CD’s led him to drop out of college and become a musician. The record opens and closes with “You Better Run” both by Iggy Pop and the Stooges. The first version is all hard rockin’ Stooges, the second is more Bluesy and probably closer to the original although I have never heard any of the original songs. Again I had only played side one a couple of times. Spiritualized does a cover sounding nothing like Blues at all with droning organ and loud guitar. Hearless Bastards covering “Done Got Old” is another one I liked.”Burn In Hell” by The Ponys(never heard of them) sounds like something by The Black Angels. I will have to listen to this some more but it sounds pretty good.
