Jefferson Airplane-Early Flight

original

A really great compilation album from Jefferson Airplane. This was released in 1974 and I bought it in 1975,a cutout. With three songs recorded in late ’65,three from ’66,and three from 1970 this is as good as any of their regular releases. The first three songs from the Takes Off album are great Folk Rock songs. Their cover of “High Flying Bird” shows off Signe Anderson’s voice sounding like Grace Slick or maybe she is sounding like Signe. “In The Morning” is a Blues song written and sung by guitarist Jorma Kaukonen making it sound like a Hot Tuna song. Jerry Garcia plays guitar on this one. “Go To Her” is a great song written by Paul Kantner with a great guitar solo by Jorma. The last two songs “Mexico” and “Have You Seen The Saucers” were released as a single in 1970,the last recordings by the classic line-up as singer Marty Balin left as did drummer Spencer Dryden. “Mexico”,a Grace Slick song, is about Operation Intercept, a Nixon program that tried to shut down marijuana coming across the border from Mexico. The song got little airplay as it was banned in many states. “Have You Seen The Saucers?” another Paul Kantner song gives a glimpse of the Science Fiction themes he would employ in Jefferson Starship. This record was seen in the Seinfeld episode when they buy the records from the old man. It’s on the top of the stack of records Kramer is carrying. I was looking to see if I knew what record it was. Most people would not have noticed it.
