Iron Butterfly-Live

With new members Lee Dorman and Eric Brann they achieved their greatest success but this line-up was also short lived. One of my very first records this is one of the records I got when I joined the Colombia House Record Club with my sister in late 1970 or early ’71. Of the 12 records we got my sister got six and I got six. I chose two Three Dog Night records, one by Tommy James, one by 5th Dimension,Led Zeppelin II,and Iron Butterfly Live. Of the six this was the one I listened to the least as I was still listening to Top 40 music at that time. I eventually grew to like side one with two of the songs having an eerie sound to them,”In The Time Of Our Lives” and “Filled With Fear”. “Soul Experience” is also good as is “You Can’t Win” and “Are You Happy” that was used as theme music for some quiz show on TV in the early 70’s. While dedicating one of the songs singer Doug Ingle used the word “damn” and I had to make sure my parents never heard that or they would not be happy. At the time I did not have my own stereo and had to listen to my records on my parents record player in the dining room. Side two has a 19 minute “In-A-Gadda-Da-Vida” that is mostly taken up with a long drum solo that is not very inspiring. There is a short guitar solo by Eric Brann and some organ by Ingle. Guitarist Brann left the band after this release.
