The Hour Glass-The Hour Glass

This is a pairing of the first two albums from The Hour Glass released in 1967 and ’68. This band included Gregg and Duane Allman. In Neil Young’s liner notes he tells of how the band was screwed by the Record Company Man. Forced to record covers of songs that did not represent the style of music they were playing, the album was a flop. The songs are pop songs, many with horns added making them sound like The 5th Dimension or The Association. You do have Gregg’s soulful voice and an occasional short solo by Duane but the music is not very inspiring. The second album called Power Of Love is a little better with Gregg writing most of the songs. The title track written by Spooner Oldham, who toured with The Drive-By Truckers for a while, is not too bad and sounds like it could have been a hit with some other of Gregg’s tunes show a more Blues leaning. There is also an instrumental cover of” Norwegian Wood” with Duane playing electric sitar. This two record set came out in 1973 ans is a used one I bought a few years ago. It’s in pretty good shape.
