Nils Frahm-Spaces

Nils Frahm is a German musician ,primarily a keyboard player. his style seems to be in the Progressive/Ambient/New Age/Avant- Garde type of playing. This is a live recording culled from shows he did in 2012-2013. He uses four keyboards in concert, three electronic and one Grand Piano.I have always loved solo piano, its an amazing instrument capable of many moods. This is a great record for anyone who likes this kind of music. Most of the music is played on the Grand Piano and is quiet and soothing. “Hammers” is a fast paced composition in which he plays a synthesizer type keyboard and the piano at the same time. It’s amazing that one man is making this music all by himself. He describes the song as “a workout” in his liner notes. Another standout in the 16 minute “For-Peter-Toilet Brushes- More”that starts with some Ambient/New Age synthesizer then takes a break for some percussive sounds before giving way to some quiet piano sounding a bit like Mike Oldfield’s Tubular Bells into more uptempo electronic keyboard playing and hen back to the piano. Another composition “Ross’s Harmonium” was recorded at “An intimate house concert” that sounds like electronic Krautrock from the 70’s. A very pleasing record from an artist I had never heard of before. This was an alternative selection from the Record of the Month Club Eric gave me for Christmas in 2017. If you didn’t like the monthly selection you could replace it with a small list of alternative titles. This looked interesting so i picked it and I’m glad I did.
