Fairport Convention-Fairport Chronicles

original

This compilation album came out in 1976 which is when I bought it. It has an interesting selection of songs from their second to fifth records plus solo Sandy Denny material and songs from side projects. With only two traditional songs, the instrumental “Bridge Over The River Ash” and “Tam Lin”,the rest are group written songs and covers.Side two is all covers with two Dylan songs, one by Dion, and one by Buddy Holly. The gem on this side is their cover of Gordon Lightfoot’s “The Way I Feel” from Fotheringay, the band that Sandy Denny and husband Trevor Lucas formed after leaving Fairport. It also has some of Fairport’s best songs including “Come All Ye”,”Walk Awhile”,”Meet On The Ledge”,”Genesis Hall”,”Percy’s Song”,and Richard Thompson’s anti-war song “Sloth”. The band continues to this day headlining their Cropredy Festival every year with about 25different members coming and going with Simon Nicol and Dave Pegg still in the band. Dave Swarbrick died in 2016 and Sandy Denny died in 1978 from complications from head injuries after a fall and alcoholism. She was 31.
