Steve Earle-Townes

This came out in 2009 and is a tribute to Townes Van Zandt who died in 1997 at the age of 52. Steve Earle was a friend of Townes and covers 15 of his songs. I have a live recording of Townes from 1973 I bought about 5 years ago. It will be a couple of years before I get to that one. The songs are mostly in a Folk music style, but “White Freightliner Blues” is a Bluegrass song and “Delta Momma Blues” is in the style of Country Blues. The first song on the record is “Pancho And Lefty” perhaps his best known song and has been coverd by many people. Donna The Buffalo, one of my favorite bands, plays it from time to time in concert. All the songs are pretty good, I like “Loretta” and “Mr. Mudd & Mr.Gold. “Marie” is a very depressing song about a man and his pregnant girlfriend living under a bridge. Although Steve plays most of the instruments on this record he does have some guests helping out like bluegrass artist Tim O’Brien, who I have seen at Merlefest,ad Tom Morello playing electris guitar on “Lungs”.His son Justin and wife at the time Allison Moorer help out on background vocals.
