Downy Mildew-Broomtree

This a band from the L.A. area and was active for about ten years starting in 1986. This is their first record after an EP in ’86. I have this on CD,one that survived the big sell-off of 2013. I must admit I didn’t listen to it much but when I saw a used copy of it in a record store I bought it. After listening to the record I was pleasantly surprised at how much I liked it. Fronted by Charlie Baldonado and Jenny Homer both on guitar and vocals and a woman on bass and backing vocals they do harmonize on some of the songs. They play a kind of Folk/Rock but sometimes sound like Shoegaze,Dream Pop,or some of the bands on the 4AD label like Lush. Side one is really good with “The Kitchen” sporting some violin, followed by two really good songs “Sally Part III”(there is a Sally Part II on side two),and “Good Dream”. The last song on the side “Hollow Girl” is a little darker with some nice instrumentation. Side two is also good,”Burnt Bridges” sounds like it could have been a hit single. The CD adds the four songs from the previous EP that I will have to listen to. A really good record from a pretty much unknown band.
