The Doobie Brothers-Living On The Fault Line

original

I didn’t buy their last two records released after What Were Once Vices… not being too impressed with what I heard from them. After hearing a couple of songs from this new record, I liked what I heard. With Jeff Baxter now a full time member and the addition of Michael McDonald’s smooth soulful voice this was a new direction for the band. Although the record had no top 40 hits there are plenty of good songs on this record. This is second only to The Captain And Me as my favorite Doobie’s record. There is a cover of a Marvin Gaye song “Little Darling(I Need You)” and “Need A Lady sung by bass played Tiran Porter that has a disco feel about it. The R&B sound of “Echoes Of Love” and “Nothing But A Heartache” got some airplay and co-writer Carly Simon had a hit with “You Belong To Me”,but it was the more Jazzy songs like “Living On The Fault Line” and “Chinatown” that got my attention. “Chinatown” is one of my favorite Doobie Bros. songs, with its Jazz guitar solo and Michael McDonald’s haunting vocals it is the best song on the record.
