Another rrally nice release from the :rarum collection om ECM Records. Drummer Paul Motian is a Philadelphia native raised in New England. As usual tracks are selected by the artist with a 20 page booklet with commentary by the artist on tracks selected, bios of the artist plus liner notes and complete discography on ECM. Most tracks are on the mellow side with the first “One In Four” with Paul Bley. John Surman and Bill Frisell sounding a bit spacey. The next is a duo “Conception Vessel” with Keith Jarrett who Motian worked with for a decade. There are four with a trio of sax, stand up bass, both plucked and bowed and drums and assorted percussion. “Folk Song For Rosie” is the best of them. The last three tracks are with a quintet featuring Bill Frisell and Joe Lovano with “It Should’ve Happened A Long Time Ago” another nice mellow piece.
