This Beatles tribute CD is actually the soundtrack to the movie I Am Sam. According to the liner notes they wanted to use the originals but finding it hard to obtain the rights they instead got others to record covers,. All in three weeks. These are all Lennon/McCartney songs. Mostly solo artists about half male and half female. Eddie Vedder, Paul Westerberg, Nick Cave, and Ben Harper contribute as do Aimee Mann, Heather Nova, Sheryl Crow and Sarah McLachlan. Bands The Black Crowes, The Vines, Stereophonics and The Wallflowers also cover songs. All done fairly close to the originals. Since this CD was short I decided to listen to another Beatles tribute called This Bird Has Flown a cover ofv all songs on their Rubber Soul album.

This was released on the 40th anniversary of Rubber Soul. A pretty good CD. The Donnas play a near perfect “Drive My Car” while The Fiery Furnaces completely deconstruct “Norwegian Wood (This Bird Has Flown)”. Sufjan Stevens makes a nearly 6 minute Progressive sounding take on”. Low’s cover of “Nowhere Man” surprisingly is not slowed down. I also liked Dar Williams cover of “You Won’t See Me” and Ben Lee’s “In My Life”. Cowboy Junkies adds some electric guitar to “Run For Your Life”.
