Since music from San Francisco in the late 60’s is some of my favorites when I saw this Box set from 2007 I had to buy it. More of a book with 4 CDs on the inside of the back cover. The 120 page book has three essays about this time period (’65-’70), full page photos of the bands and a bio of each band with smaller photos. The 4 CDs have 77 songs roughly in chronological order. I have listened to all 4 CDs before. I put on disc 3 and 4. Disc 3 titled The Summer Of Love. The first song is “Alabama Bound” by The Charlatans. Also on this is “Somebody To Love” recorded live by The Great Society, “Omaha” by Moby Grape, The Grateful Dead’s “The Golden Road (To Unlimited Devotion)”, “Codine” by Quicksilver Messenger Service, “Down On me” by Big Brother & The Holding Company, “White Rabbit” by Jefferson Airplane, “Soul Sacrifice” by Santana, and many others. Disc 4 is labeled The Man Can’t Bust Our Music and starts with Santana’s “Evil Ways” followed by “Red The Sign Post” by 50 Foot Hose a band that fused Psychedelic with early electronic sounds. “Quicksilver Girl” is a great one from The Steve Miller Band. “Revolution” by Mother Earth is from the soundtrack of a movie with the same name from 1968 and has a more Blues Sound. “Murder In My Heart For The Judge” by Moby Grape was a song I first heard on 3 Dog Nights album Harmony. “White Bird” by It’s A Beautiful Day is a song I had on one of my early cassette tapes I recorded in the early 70’s. Really love that song. Grateful Dead’s single “Dark Star”, under 3 minutes, turned int 20 and 30 minute jams when played live. The final three tracks are “Mexico” Jefferson Airplane’s response to Nixon’s Operation Intercept, a plan to stop marijuana coming into the U.S. from Mexico, Janis Joplin’s “Mercedes Benz” and “Get Together” the Youngblood’s Hit. A 60’s anthem if there ever was one. Disc 1 opens with the original “Let’s Get Together” by writer Chet Helms ( Dino Valenti of Quicksilver Messenger Service) and recorded in 1964. Altogether an awesome collection of music from that time and place.
