This Genesis tribute CD is on the Purple Pyramid Label a division of Cleopatra Records. Purple Pyramid handles the more Psychedelic and Progressive bands. 11 tracks highlighting the earlier Genesis with only two from the Phil Collins led years. John Ford of Strawbs fame does a decent version of “The Carpet Crawlers” the only song on both tributes. Patrick Moraz plays a keyboard version of “Los Endos” the only artist to offer a song on both tribute CDs. Daevid Allen the founder of Anglo-French band Gong covers “Visions Of Angels” from Genesis’s second album Trespass. Mother Gong led by Allen’s partner Gilli Smyth adds her vocals to a weird and spacey rendition of “In The beginning” the title track of Genesis’s first album from 1969. John Wetton’s version of “Your Own Special Way” from Wind and Weathering is a disappointment making the ballad even more sappy. “Dancing With The Moonlight Knight” and “The Cinema Show” both from Selling England by the Pound are Ok but both fall far short of the originals and end abruptly, although The Flower Kings “The Cinema Show” is very close instrumentally to the original. “Broadway Melody” by Controlled Bleeding, more of an Experimental and Industrial band is one of the better tracks. The last track “The Waiting Room” a strange instrumental from The Lamb Lies Down on Broadway, is a little longer by Architectural Metaphor and just as strange. “Can Utility And The Coastliners” from Foxtrot is by Brand X, a band Phil Collins sometimes plays drums in. This tribute focuses on some of their lesser known songs while the other has more of their well known songs.
