Various Artists-Tales From Yesterday

This tribute to Yes is on the Magna Carta label home to many new progressive bands of the 90’s. This 1996 CD even has a Roger Dean cover. Many of these songs are very close to the original like “Siberian Khatru”, always one of my favorite Yes songs, done by Stanley Snail group put together for this tribute featuring Nick D’Virgilio of Spock’s Beard. Cairo’s “South Side Of The Sky” and Enchant’s “Changes”, a favorite from 90215, are also close to the originals. Steve Morse plays Steve Howe’s two acoustic solos “The Clap” and “Mood For A Day”. Yes Members Peter Banks and Patrick Moraz give instrumental interpretations of “Astral Traveller”, from yes’s second album with Banks, and “Soon” the coda from “The Gates Of Delerium”. “Roundabout”, “Don’t Kill The Whale” and “Starship Trooper” by Robert Berry, Magellan and Jeronimo Road, a band featuring Rick Wakeman’s son Adam, all change the songs up quite a bit. A highlight for me was “Turn Of The Century” with Steve Howe playing acoustic guitar and Annie Haslam, of Rennaissance, providing the vocals. Perhaps even better than the original. As tribute albums go this one was a good one and one I enjoyed listening to
