Skip Spence was the drummer for Jefferson Airplanes first album. He left after that to start a new group Moby Grape. In 1968 under the influence of LSD he went on a rampage with an axe and was put in Bellevue State Hospital and diagnosed with schizophrenia. While there he wrote these songs and recorded them in 1969 after being released after 6 months. Playing all instruments himself the record sold poorly and was soon deleted. Suffering from mental illness and drug and alcohol addiction he never recorded another record. He died in 1999 from lung cancer. This tribute album came out in ’99 shortly after his death. Every song from the album is covered plus five more from the sessions not on the record. Many well known artists contributed to this CD including Robert Plant, Robyn Hitchcock, Mudhoney, Tom Waits and Beck. Since I’ve never heard the originals these songs sound like they are by the artists themselves. “All Come To Meet Her” by Diesel Park West is a really good one and one I will put on my playlist. I also like “Dixie Peach Promenade” done by Greg Dulli of The Afghan Wigs. “Book Of Moses” sounds like a Tom Waits song with his gravelly voice and odd percussion. Flying Saucer Attack gives a spacey rendition of “Grey-Afro”. There is a hidden track “Land Of The Sun” by Spence recorded in 1996 for an X-Files soundtrack but never used.
