Phil Lesh And Friends-Bethel, New York

In May of 2006 my wife and I took a vacation at an out of season ski resort in Sullivan County New York. Knowing it was near the Woodstock site we drove there to have a look. They were doing the finishing touches on a museum and an outdoor concert venue there. The venue was set to open July 4th with some kind of orchestra or military band with the first official concert on the 6th with Phil Lesh. I decided to buy a ticket and come back six weeks later for the show. The museum wasn’t open yet which was at the top of the hill looking down where the stage was set up. The venue was behind the museum at the bottom of a smaller hill. Jazz Rock duo Benevento and Russo opened up followed by Trey Anastasio and Mike Gordon of Phish. Benevento and Russo joined them for a few songs at the end of their set. Phil Lesh friends included John Molo, Barry Sless, and Bob Barraco all from Grateful Dead satellite bands. Larry Campbell from Bob Dylan’s band played guitar, with Joan Osborne taking most lead vocals. A sax player was used on a few songs. Upon entering I saw the Instant Live van where you could buy a CD of the show after it was over. I had got one in 1985 at an Allman Brothers show I attended so I decided to get one from this show. Don’t think I’ve ever listened to this before but the sound is amazing even better than I remembered it to be. Starting off with “Shakedown Street” with some nice sax they then play an incredible sounding “Cumberland Blues” that I just put on my playlist. “This Wheel’s On Fire”, “Candyman” and “I Know You Rider” finish up an hour long first set. Set two which I later learned was the same set the Grateful Dead played at Woodstock was amazing with Trey joining to play some awesome guitar for the whole set. It starts of with a 38 minute jam encompassing “Uncle John’s Band” and “St. Stephen”. After “Mama Tried” they launch into “Dark Star”. “High Time”, “Turn On Your Lovelight” and “He’s Gone” finish the second set. At some point near the end of this set Trey does his Jimi Hendrix impression and sets his guitar on fire. The encore consists of “Touch Of Grey” and Box Of Rain” and Phil’s doner rap. An amazing show, as good as any Grateful Dead show I have Heard. I later saw Phil in Reading with Chris Robinson on lead vocals but I don’t remember it being as good as this show.
