A really cool band from Australia. Their music could be described as World, New Age, Darkwave, Folk, and Gothic. They use traditional instruments as well as employing modern electronics. Dead Can Dance is a duo of Brendan Perry and Lisa Gerrard. She has an amazing voice and vocal range and sometimes sings in her own language as does Liz Frazier of Cocteau Twins. Perry also sings in a deep voice. This compilation CD, from 1991, includes tracks from four releases from ’85 to ’90 with two recorded for this release. I had five of their CDs but two were sold. A couple sound like Medieval chants, there are two instrumentals, one sounds like a traditional Folk song. Some have some beautiful moments. The first two tracks have a Middle Eastern sound, music I’ve never liked for some reason. The rest are very good especially “Ullyses”, “Cantara”, “Enigma Of The Absolute”, “The Writing On My Fathers Hand” and “Spirit”. Sadly, this doesn’t appear to have a vinyl release. Looking at the other two CDs I have I discovered that Toward The Within is a live recording from 1994 that I have never listened to. Since I enjoyed this CD so much I want to hear how they sound live and will put that one on tomorrow.
