A great compilation CD of early Funk music recorded in 1970. 10 songs at 78 minutes so they are quite long, one over 14 minutes. The Cd comes with a 12 page booklet with photos, liner notes and the story of his band The JBs and how it came to be after his other band members left him in 1969. This group of teenagers including “Bootsy” Collins and his brother “Catfish” were playing in a bar in Cincinati when James asked them to join him. Many of these songs charted high on the R&B charts at the time. “Get Up I Feel Like Being a Sex Machine”, “Super Bad”, “Give It Up Or Turn It Loose” and “Soul Power” are on here. Some great playing but no soloing as James keeps his routine going through the whole song. Sure, they’re repetitive and they all sound pretty much the same but they are all Funky as hell. I dare anyone to stay still when listening to this stuff. After about a year these players left over financial concerns, with Bootsy and his brother joining George Clinton’s Parliament/Funkadelic thing. Bootsy later found fame with his own band. Brown’s subsequent bands were also called The JBs but these were the Original JBs.
