Greg Brown-In The Hills Of California

A Folk singer from Iowa this is a 2 CD set at almost 150 minutes long. Compiled from performances at the Kate Wolf Music Festival from 1997 to 2003 in Southern California. The songs are all in a Folk/Country/Blues style with Brown’s singing reminding me of Tom Waits, Townes Van Zandt and sometimes like Jeb Puryear of Donna The Buffalo. He is backed by an electric guitarist, mandolin, or harmonica on all tracks. Shawn Colvin sings back-up on one track from 2003. A few covers by Kate Wolf, Smokey Robinson, Robert Johnson and “Don’t Let Me Down” the Lennon/McCartney song. It’s an OK CD. I listened to the first CD and about half of the other.
