One I bought in 1976 when it was released. This is a used one I bought I don’t remember where or when I bought it. The previous owners name and fingerprint are on the label. He didn’t take very good care of his record because it is in bad shape and destined for the trash. In ’76 Zappa permanently disbanded The Mothers of Invention although Ruth and Ian Underwood, Napolean Murphy Brock and Roy Estrada play on it. Captain Beefheart plays harmonica on “Find Her Finer”. The cover is of his new band featuring Terry Bozzio, Patrick O’Hearn and Eddie Jobson but the latter two did not play on the album. Another great record and his last consistently good one except Joe’s Garage from ’79. “Wind Up Working In A Gas Station” is a Rock song. “Black Napkins” is one of three guitar driven instrumentals from a show in Japan. The other two are “Zoot Allures” and “Friendly Little Finger”. “Wonderful Wino” is a song from 1970 written with one time Mother Jeff Simmons. “Disco Boy” was a bit of a hit for him with ex GTO (Girls Together Outrageously) Miss Sparky adding background vocals. A little preview of his work in the 80’s that I don’t like as much as his 70’s stuff. “Pinky” is about a blow up doll. “The Torture Never Stops” is a nearly 10 minute track about the “evil prince” with lots of guitar work and a woman screaming and moaning in the background. She sounds more like she’s having sex than being tortured. It was in 1976 that I got to see Zappa at The Spectrum. Since I was only familiar with the five albums I owned at the time many of the songs I didn’t know and there was lots of long jamming. He did play three from this record that I did know “Black Napkins”, “The Torture Never Stops” and “Pinky” where he brought a blow up doll on stage and abused it in different ways.
