Frank Zappa And The Mothers Of Invention-Mothermania

A compilation album with songs from their first three albums from 1966,’67 and ’68. Released in 1969 this was one of the first on Zappa’s Bizarre label. This another great sounding reissue from 2019 mastered by Bernie Grundman and one I bought today at the FYE store at the Berkshire Mall. $28 but I got a coupon for $10 off my next purchase in September. They also had Chunga’s Revenge there for $31. I’ll use that coupon and by it if it’s still there in Sept. I had never heard any of these three records until I bought the Old Masters Vol. 1 box set in 1989. I did listen to them at least once before I sold all my Zappa albums in 1991. “Brown Shoes Don’t Make It” is a jab at American society and incorporates Blues, Classical, Rock, Do-Wop, Psychedelica and dialog all in 7 and a half minutes. Listening to this I can see were “Magdelena” came from a few years later. “Call Any Vegetable” is one I had heard on the radio in the early 70’s and had on one of my tapes of songs recorded off the radio then. “Duke Of Prunes”, “Who Are The Brain Police”, “It Can’t Happen Here” and “Mother People” are just plain weird. I Don’t think anyone else was making music like that in the 60’s. “Plastic People” and “Hungry Freaks Daddy” are two I put on my Best of Zappa the 60’s tape I made before selling my records in ’91. I made 6 90 minute tapes of my favorite songs from the nearly 50 albums I had. “America Drinks And Goes Home” is piano based lounge music with lots of background noise from a bar at closing time. It’s the final section of the suite that is side two of their second album Absolutely Free. All the songs on this record flow seamlessly into the next and make for 20 minutes of uninterrupted music.
