After the original Mothers of Invention broke up in 1969 Zappa released two albums of unreleased recordings both studio and live. Burnt Weeny Sandwich came out in February of 1970 and Weasels Ripped my Flesh in August. Both of those records were among the 15 or so records I bought in 1987 from the guy one of my nieghbors knew. They were not in the best of shape but played OK. After buying the 2016 reissue of Hot Rats mastered by Bernie Grundman, I saw this one in the store in Kutztown and like Hot Rats this pressing in superb. The gatefold cover came with the original fold out poster of the Mothers band members. The record is basically two long Jazz Rock instrumentals “Little House I Used To Live In” and the suite “Igor’s Boogie Phase One>Overture To A Holiday In Berlin>Theme From Burnt Weeny Sandwich>Igor’s Boogie Phase Two>Holliday In Berlin Full Blown>Aybe Sea”. Both have great jamming from Zappa’s guitar, Sugarcane Harris on violin, Don Preston and Ian Underwood on piano and keyboards and Buzz and Bunk Gardner on woodwinds and trumpet. Beginning and ending the record are two songs from 1956 and 1960 that sound like they belong on his Ruben and The Jets album. “WPLJ” was recorded by The Four Duces and “Valarie” was originally done by Jackie and the Starlights. I will be on the lookout for Uncle Meat and Chunga’s Revenge which will complete my collection of his records from 1969 to 1972 except for Weasels Ripped My Flesh and Filmore East-June 1971 which I don’t care for. Also on the lookout for Overnight Sensation and Joe’s Garage. He put out 20 albums in the 70’s most of which are very good. When he got into the 80’s there was too much of his political rants and not enough focus on the music. Not sure if I would buy any of those again.
