Original
This is the first Zappa album that I bought in 1975 and is probably my favorite. The one I’m listening today is one I found in the dollar bin at Right Round Records in Robesonia. The cover and record are not in very good shape but it’s an original pressing from 1975. This Mothers Of Invention line-up includes George Duke, Napoleon Murphy Brock, Ruthy Underwood, Chester Thompson and Tom Fowler. Captain Beefheart plays harmonica on “San Ber’dino”. “Inca Roads” has an awesome guitar solo recorded at a concert in Finland plus a synth solo by Duke and marimba by Underwood. “Po-Jama People” also has a long solo by Zappa. “Andy” is another great song with parts that sound like Funkadelic. “Can’t Afford No Shoes” is a great little 2 and a half minute ditty. “Sofa is played twice, once as an instrumental and laterv with lyrics in English and German. The record is filled with Zappa’s humor, inside jokes and great playing by the band. The cover is by Cal Schenkel. The back of the gatefold cover has a star chart showing constellations and signs of the Zodiac and stars. All with humorous names.
