Frank Zappa-200 Motels

A soundtrack record from his movie 200 Motels. The movie deals with life on the road for The Mothers Of Invention and includes them, several groupies(Pamela Des Barres and Lucy Offerrall of The GTOs), Ringo Starr and Keith Moon in the cast. I rented the movie when I was living in Philly. Don’t remember much of it except that I thought it was stupid and not very good. Maybee I’ll watch it again sometime. This is one of a couple Zappa albums I bought at a garage sale back when I was living in Mohnton. Saw a yard sale when I was driving and noticed some records there. There were about 50 albums from the 70’s. Most I already had but grabbed two Zappa records, this one and Apostrophe. I think they were 50 cents each. One of his least liked records I have seen used copies of this in several record stores. With The Mothers Of Invention and The Royal Philharmonic Orchestra the orchestral pieces are a drawback to me. The Mothers include new members Howard Kaplan and Mark Volman, (The Phlorescent Leech and Eddie or Flo and Eddie) the singers from the 60’s Pop band The Turtles. Turtles bass player Jim Pons also joined the band. Other Mothers include Ian Underwood and his wife Ruth, Jimmy Carl Black, Aynsley Dunbar and George Duke. This two record set with gatefold cover had the 16 page booklet, designed by Cal Schenkel, with it that has scenes from the movie. The record includes dialog from the movie, comedy bits, orchestral pieces and a few actual songs. As usual there are inside jokes, and jabs at the Hippie culture and organized religion. As for songs “Mystery Roach” and “Magic Fingers” are typical Mothers Of Invention song. “Lonesome Cowboy Burt” is a weird Country song. Flo and Eddies harmony vocals are good on “Daddy, Daddy, Daddy” and “What Will This Evening Bring Me This Morning”. I also like the 8 minute suite composed of “She Painted Up Her Face>Janet’s big Dance Number>Half A Dozen Provocative Squats>Mysterioso>Shove It Right In”. “Redneck Eats” is a Jazzy piano instrumental. The beginning of “Does This Kind Of Life Look Interesting To You” is obviously where The Tubes got the ending of “White Punks On Dope” from. “Strictly Genteel(The Finale)” is a mix of the orchestra and some Rock jamming. The record and cover are not in very good shape with lots of skips on side four.
