Neil spent the 80’s releasing albums of diverse styles like Country, Folk, Rockabilly, Blurs, electronic and Rock, none of which were very successful. I owned a few of them but they were sold. Freedom was released in 1989 and was more like his records from the 70’s. Like Rust Never Sleeps, this record starts and ends with two versions of “Rockin’ In The Free World”. A live acoustic version is the first track followed by “Crime In The City” one of the best tracks on the record with some rare sax and trumpets added. The four remaining songs on side one are mostly acoustic based Country and Folk songs. Side two has a cover of the standard “On Broadway”. “Wrecking Ball” is another Country style song that was covered by Emmylou Harris. “No More” is another of the best songs on the record and the last song is the electric version of “Rockin’ In The Free World”. His best selling record in a decade and at over 61 minutes it’s a lot to pack on a single record.
