Neil Young-Tonight’s The Night

This is disc 7 of The Neil Young Archives Original Release Series released in 2014. I bought it three or four years ago. The gatefold cover came with an insert with writing about “Waterface” and and something written in another language. Very strange. Recorded in 1093 as a response to the death of Crazy Horse guitarist Danny Whitten and roadie Bruce Berry, the younger brother of Jan Berry of the Surf Rock duo Jan And Dean, of drug and heroin overdoses in 1972. The album was not released until June of 1975. I had never heard this record before except for the songs “Tonight’s The Night”, “Come On Baby Let’s Go Downtown”, a live recording with Whitten on lead guitar and vocals from 1972, and “Roll Another Number For The Road” that I heard on the radio. The Santa Monica Flyers, composed of members of The Stray Gators and Crazy Horse were credited as the back-up band. Most of the songs are in the Country Rock vein. “Tonight’s The Night” opens and closes the record with two different versions something he would do on later records.
