Lucinda Williams-This Sweet Old World

This is a re-recording of her wonderful 1992 album Sweet Old World 25 years later. One song “He Never Got Enough Love” is missing and the others are in a different order. Side four of this two record set on pink vinyl has four new bonus tracks. When I heard about this record I thought it would be a reissue of the ’92 album which I would love to have on vinyl but this newre version is not too bad. Obviously her voice is not what it used to be and that is a drawback and the songs aren’t too different from the originals. The two most rocking songs “Pineola” and “Hot Blood” have some guitar solos but with the violin solo on “Pineola” replaced with a guitar solo. Overall I like the original better. To make matter worse the pressing is another bad one.

After listening to this new recording I had to listen to the original 1992 release I have on cassette. In 2013 I sold all my cassettes to a guy I met at Jakes flea market in Barto. I had a table there every Saturday in August that year. After buying all the cassettes I had there he came to my house in Bally to buy the rest on two separate occasions. The only ones he didn’t want were my Country tapes. I also have her first self titled release and a five song EP from that record on tape. I have two more of her albums on CD. I used to have her great Live At The Filmore CD but that was sold in 2013. Love to find a vinyl copy of that one. This was one of my favorites of the 50 or 60 Country tapes I have. Her singing sounds great but would deteriorate over the years. The music is rather somber with three songs dealing with suicide, the very sad title track, “Pineola” and “Little Angel, Brother”. “He Never Got Enough Love” is another sad song. “Hot Blood” is a great rocking song with most of the others in the Country style. The last song is a great cover of Nick Drake’s “Which Will”.
