Weather Report-Live In Tokyo

This was recorded in January of 1972. A Japan only release it made its first U.S. appearance on CD in 2014. This is a reissue from 2017 on red vinyl I bought a few years ago at Right Round Records in Temple. Weather Report were formed in 1971 and released about ten or twelve records through the 80’s. A Jazz fusion band, their main players were Joe Zawinul and Wayne Shorter. For this recording Shorter plays alto and soprano sax, Zawinul plays piano and very distorted electric piano. Miroslav Vitous plays acoustic and electric bass and there is a drummer and a percussionist I have never heard of. The first record has two long Medleys of four compositions each, really just a long jam hard to tell where one ends and another begins. Side three is a composition called “Orange Lady” while side four has two more medleys. Not a whole lot of soloing, each member seems to be doing his own thing. Generally, kind of laid back with a lot of quiet passages. The more louder sections sound a lot like what Miles Davis was playing at the time. Both Shorter and Zawinul had played with Miles at one time. The pressing of this record is very good for once. No crackles or pops even it the quiet parts.
