The Velvet Underground-Andy Warhol’s Velvet Underground

The Velvet Underground was a legendary and influential band from the U.S. Formed in New York city in 1965 with the help of Andy Warhol it consisted of Lou Reed on guitar , John Cale on organ and viola and Sterling Morrison and Maureen Tucker on bass and drums. Cale and Morrison add their harmony to Lou Reed’s “Singing”. Originally released in 1971 this is a 1983 reissue from The Netherlands. I’m sure I bought this in 1983 when I was living in Harmony Crest apartments in Newark, Delaware before moving to Boston on August. It’s a two record set with a glossy cover withy artwork inspired by Warhol. It’s an excellent compilation with songs from their first three records. John Cale left after the second record to go solo and Reed left after the third. A fourth record , Loaded was released after Reed’s departure. A no original members band led by Doug Yule, Cale’s replacement for the third record, put out a fifth record Squeeze which was pretty bad. There are their groundbreaking songs like “I’m Waiting For My Man”, “White Light/White Heat”, “Heroin” plus “Venus In Furs” and “Femme Fatal” and “All Tomorrow’s Parties” sung by Nico. Some of Lou’s psychedelic/noise guitar explosions are heard on “I heard Her Call My Name”, “European Son” and the 17 minute “Sister Ray”. More delicate quiet songs like “Sunday Morning”, “Pale Blue Eyes” “Candy Says” and “Here She Comes Now” are also here. On “There She Goes Again” Reed does his Dylan impression. “Black Angels Death Song” another psychedelic gem is where the band Black Angels got it’s name. The record sounds very good but the cover is a little worn and the two corners are damaged because I had the inside cover on my wall at some point.
