Townes Van Zandt-Live At The Old Quarter

I wasn’t too familiar with Towns Van Zandt except for hearing Donna The Buffalo sing “Pancho And Lefty” in concert a few times. I also have a Steve Earl tribute to him. Steve named his son Justin Townes Earl after him. I saw this record at Barnes & Noble and picked it up. It’s a 2012 reissue of a 1977 release. Recorded at The Old Quarter a small bar in Houston Texas in July of 1973 Townes sings and accompanies himself on acoustic guitar. The overall sound of the performance is quite good and sounds very intimate. I knew a few of the songs from the Steve Earl record but they all sounded good. His style ranges from Folk to Country to Blues. He sounds very relaxed, telling a few jokes and apologizing for the broken A.C. “It’s going to get hot in here” he says. Of the 27 songs he covers songs by Merle Travis, Bo Didley, and Lightnin’ Hopkins as well as his own with different styles of guitar playing. My first time listening to all four sides and I really enjoyed it. Townes Van Zandt died in January 1st 1997 from complications related to alcohol and heroin addiction. His namesake Justin Townes Earl died from an overdose of fentanyl laced cocaine in 2020.
