A band from Birmingham, England consisting of Steve Winwood, Jim Capaldi, Dave Mason, and Chris Wood. This is their first album from late 1967. This is a reissue I bought about twenty years ago. It’s a copy of the original U.K. release. The U.S. release had a different cover and two songs were replaced with three non album singles. I think I would prefer the U.S. version as the three added tracks “Paper Sun”, “Hole In My Shoe”, and “Smiling Phases” are all good songs. As you might expect from a late 60’s English band the music is Psychedelic in nature some a little weird or comical sounding like The Beatles, Small Faces, Pretty Things, Procol Harem and others of that time. “Dear Mr. Fantasy” the last track on side one is the standout song and one of their classics with a great guitar solo from Steve Winwood. “Utterly Simple” has some Eastern influences with Dave Mason playing the sitar. “Dealer” has some Spanish style guitar while “Giving To You”, an instrumental, has a Jazz influence with Chris Wood playing flute. The first song “Heaven Is In Your Mind” was also the first song on Three Dog Night’s live album I listened to last week. Traffic’s is more experimental with a guitar solo fadeout with some yelling and other noises.
