Matthew Sweet-Tomorrow Forever

I was attracted by the cover of this one and with no title or artist on the cover I had to look at the spine to see it was by Matthew Sweet. The harlequin painting is by Jean Maio circa 1962 according to the liner notes. Her art also adorns the inside of this two record gatefold cover and both record sleeves which also have lyrics and liner notes. A typical Matthew Sweet Power Pop record I think this is one of his better ones. Listened to side one when I bought it, probably around 2018 and put the first song “Trick” on my playlist. 17 songs at nearly 60 minutes I thought they all sounded pretty good. Besides his usual backing musicians, Ric Menck and Ivan Jullian, Rod Argent plays piano on three tracks, Gary Louris of The Jayhawks and Debbi Peterson of the Bangles also contribute. Tomorrow’s Daughter, released a year after this, has 13 leftovers from these recording sessions and again features more artwork from Maio. If I see it I will pick it up. Matthew Sweet also made a series of records called Under The Covers with Susanna Hoffs, also of The Bangles, which are covers of songs from the 60’s and 70’s. I have the first two on CD. Someday I will listen to them.
