Sun Ra And His Arkestra- At Inter Media Arts

This is a limited edition of 1000 released on Record Store Day 2016. It’s a three record set with a trifold cover recorded on Long Island in April of 1991. Sun Ra had suffered a stroke two months earlier and had limited use of his left hand. He leads a 17 piece band with his long time associates John Gilmore, Marshall Allen, and June Tyson. There are multiple saxophonists, percussionists, flautists, vocalists, and trumpeters as well as violin, bass, clarinet and trombone. Sun Ra plays piano and synthesizers. After a short percussion solo the concert opens up with June Tyson singing “Springtime Again” with a nice flute solo. The tracks range from old Jazz songs like Duke Ellington’s “Prelude To A Kiss” and Woody Herman’s “Early Autumn ” to some of Sun Ra’s compositions “The Mayan Temples” and “Friendly Galaxy” that could be called Progressive. “Love In Outer Space” and “We Travel The Spaceways” feature June Tyson and others chanting. Many of the pieces have cool instrumental breaks with some interesting percussion. An enjoyable listen, this was the first time I put it on. In 1993 Sun Ra had another stroke that killed him. He was 79. The Arkestra, led by Gilmore and Allen continues to play Sun Ra’s spacey Jazz to this day.
