After the breakup of The Red House Painters Mark Kozelek started this new project Sun Kil Moon. Basically a solo effort he is helped on this album by ex-Painters Jerry Vessel and Anthony Koutsos. This first album by them was released in 2003, reissued in 2018. I originally had this on CD. The music is not unlike Red House Painters, mostly acoustic with some electric guitars. Three of the songs are named after boxers that died in their 20’s. The first song “Glen Tipton” is about Judas Priest’s guitarist,. “Cary Me Ohio” is my favorite song about Kozelek’s home state. “Duk Koo Kim” is about the boxer killed in the ring in 1982. The 14 and a half minute song takes up all of side three of this two record set. It’s got a nice long ending with acoustic and electric guitars. This vinyl edition comes with a bonus track, an acoustic version of “Gentle Moon”. I must admit I didn’t listen to the CD much when I had it so I wasn’t too familiar with the songs, but this is another record I want to hear again.
