A Scottish born singer/songwriter Al Stewart’s songs are more like stories than the usual verse and chorus. The songs on this two record gatefold cover album are from his first four releases from 1967 to 1972. Some well know musicians help on these songs including Jimmy Page, Rick Wakeman, and members of Fairport Convention. The song “Electric Los Angeles Sunset” was a song I recorded off the radio in the early 70’s and was probably why I bought this used record sometime in the 90’s. I think this is the first time playing this record which is mainly acoustic with some electric guitar here and there. The stories are about relationships and historical subjects. The second record in this set has all of his second album Love Chronicles but one track. “Love Chronicles” a nearly 18 minute accounting of Stewarts sexual encounters from kindergarten to adulthood. All singing with no instrumental interruptions it’s a lot to take in. Lyrics are printed on the record sleeves so you can follow along. Unusual to hear the word fucking in a song from 1969. He rhymes it with plucking. Don’t like much of this record, bought at the Ephrata store for $6. Not in very good shape either.
